RTA/ McDONALD'S NOVICE #3 JULY 17-20, 2006

The RTA welcomes Rene Mendoza, who recently became Woodlake's Head Tennis Pro under the directorship of Ken McKay.

Ken and Rene take pride in his facility, and it shows. From the potted floral arrangements near every bench to the well stocked coolers filled with fresh fruit and drinks for the players, this tournament is a great stop in the RTA/McDonald's Summer Series!

Novice tournaments are for players wanting to get exposure to tournament play as well as more seasoned players who do not yet have a MATA/VT ranking. MATA/VT players must play in Satellite tournaments.

The final RTA/McDonald's Novice tournament of the 2006 Season will be held at Salisbury July 31 - August 3.

Boys' 16 Singles Final

Tyler Colbert d. Jody Cox 4-6; 6-4; 1-0(10-3)

Jody Cox (left) and Tyler Colbert. Tyler is a rising junior and plays on the tennis team at Midlothian HS. Jody will be a sophomore at Atlee HS who trains at Burkwood.

Boys' 16 Singles Consolation Final

Ryan Tomajczyk (left) and Tucker Dowdy. Ryan recently moved here from Northern Virginia. This was his first RTA tournament; he has only been playing tennis for a few weeks.

Zachary King d. Peter Dooley 6-0; 7-5

Zachary King plays on the Byrd Middle School Tennis team. He trains at Canterbury. "I tried to controls the points and to go for the shots I knew I could get," he said of his strategy.

Boys' 14 Singles Consolation Final

Joshua Bortell d. Andrew Park 10-1

Andrew Park (left) and Joshua Bortell. Andrew is a rising 9th grader at Midlothian HS. Joshua will be a freshman at James River HS.

Orme Thompson (left) and Chris James had a 2 1/2 hour match in the 95 degree heat. Orme plays at St. Anne's in Charlottesville.

Boys' 12 Singles Final

Jack Walsh d. Colton Sanford 6-2, 6-0

12s Champion Jack Walsh plays at Dominion Club. Immediately after his win, his mom took him to get a McDonald's Bacon Egg and Cheese McGriddle. "He's been asking me to get one all week," she said.

John and Harrison Clement played in the boys 12s division. They are rising 7th graders at Steward School.
