2007 MIXED MEMBER GUEST TOURNAMENT

Pat
Perry (ACAC) playfully joked at the start of the tournament about an email
he had received from his partner, Katherine Berry. "It was five
pages," he said. The email purportedly detailed what he was supposed to do
and not do during the week-long tournament.
Whatever
the strategy Katherine set forth on the (non-existent) email, it was good enough
to get the team to the Open Division finals on Friday night. But it was
Tom Bryan (Dominion Club) and Niki Smith who took home the trophy. Bryan,
who wore a Willow Oaks Member Guest 1997 t-shirt, has paired up with WOCC
members to win the tournament multiple times. This year was his first time
playing with Smith.
In
the 7.0 Division Final, Jack Berry and Melissa Abell (Robious) fought off a
strong showing by Kristi Spencer (Ridgetop) and Nick Cohen to claim their silver
plates. Berry and Abel made up for last year's loss in the finals to
Jennifer Van Ness and Charles Wayland (Ridgetop). Van Ness and Wayland
moved up in '07 to play in the Open Division, and had a strong tournament this
year as well, taking home the A Flight title.
In
the 7.0 Division, a Wednesday night match was the highlight of the tournament -
for spectators at least. Bob Brichta and Robbin Steele (Robious) were
serving at 5-2 (40-love) in the third set but found themselves in a tie-break
situation with opponents Rafe Wilkinson and Jenny Maraghy (CCV) an hour
later. Tourney Director Lynn Bybee was called to the court at 9-all in the
tiebreaker for the third set when the participants realized they had been
serving from the wrong side of the court. "We were delirious,"
said Robbin. Lynn laughed about the fact that Brichta and Steele had
already won the match at that point but they didn't even know it.
"They were up 9-4 in a 7 point tiebreak but kept playing," he
said. Brichta and Steele won the match eventually at 12-10 in the third
set tiebreaker.
The
Willow Oaks tournament committee would like to extend its thanks to all who
