From the Spider tennis family to yours, we would like to wish everyone a happy holiday season! With our fall season now concluded, we turn our attention to our 2018 spring season. Pre-season training begins on January 13th, and our first match is Saturday, January 20th, in Charlottesville. We have twenty-two matches scheduled, seven of which will be played at the University of Richmond. Our regular season opens up against the defending National Champions UVA. Your support throughout the season is vital to our team’s success, and we encourage all of our fans, alumni, and donors to attend our matches this spring.  Below is a link to our 2018 spring schedule.

New Facility:

Our new outdoor facility is complete, and work will soon begin on the area surrounding the courts. With the addition of two courts, and a redesign of the compete facility, we will now have one of the top outdoor tennis facilities in the Mid-Atlantic. I have attached several pictures of the courts to this email, and we will continue to send you more updates as the exterior of the facility starts to take shape! We would again like to thank all of you who made the new facility possible.

Future Spider:

National Signing Day for Men’s Tennis concluded on November 15th, and we welcomed John Walsh to the program. John is from Bryn Mawr, PA, and he is currently a senior at The Haverford School just outside of Philadelphia. We are extremely excited to welcome John to the Spider Family for the 2018-2019 season.

Richmond vs JMU:

This year marks the inaugural season of an annual match between University of Richmond and JMU.  Salisbury Country Club will host the match on February 16th.  Mark your calendars!  We anticipate a strong match between two schools with strong alumni networks and tennis fan bases in the Richmond area. We expect the match to be the highest attended collegiate tennis match in Richmond in 2018.  We encourage you to come out and support the Spiders!

Alumni Spotlight:

In this edition of the Spider Update, we would like spotlight a recent alum, Canyon Teague. Canyon graduated in 2017 with a degree in English. Canyon was critical to the success of the Spiders throughout his career, and was especially instrumental in the Spiders success during the 2017 season. After graduation, Canyon moved to Columbus, OH.  He now works for Nationwide Insurance as a Claims Specialist. We want to wish Canyon the best of luck with his future endeavors.

Alumni Update:

In our first Spider Update, we highlighted former Spider Jacob Dunbar. Jacob is currently serving as our Volunteer Assistant Coach, and also currently playing professional tennis. Last week, Jacob reached the semi-finals of a professional event in Tallahassee, FL. With this result, Jacob should now be ranked within the top 1,000 players in the world.

Friends of Spider Tennis

As we begin this new chapter of Spider tennis, we are establishing the Friends of Spider Tennis program. Your financial support is vital to the future growth of our program. To fully reach our goals, we need to provide additional resources to our current and future Spiders. You can help us by donating directly to the Men’s Tennis program. Your generosity will provide the resources needed to help make our program one of the top programs in the country.
