CCV Team Competes At Nationals
Congratulations to The Country Club of Virginia’s 4.5 men’s team who competed at the USTA National Senior 4.5 Championships in Indian Wells, California, on October 18-21. After winning the local, district and sectional championships, the squad played three of the most competitive team matches of its season, narrowly losing 2-1 to Texas and Midwest and defeating Southwest 2-1. The deciding matches in both the Texas and Midwest matches came down to final third-set tie-breakers, 10-8 in the Texas match and 11-9 in the Midwest match. The CCV team fell short of advancing to the semi-finals by a mere few points.
Noteworthy is the fact that nearly all of the teams who advance to Nationals at any level are usually comprised of independent teams with players from different clubs and different cities. 2012 was only the second time that a CCV men’s team qualified for Nationals, the first being in 1999, when its 5.0 team competed at the 5.0 Nationals in New York. Four members of that 1999 team, Greg Williams, Chris Blair, Chris Conquest, and Stuart Horsley were on the 4.5 team that competed in California.
