RTA/ McDONALD'S NOVICE #2  JULY 4-7, 2006

Head Pro Bo Webb credited the holiday for a lower than usual turnout for this annual novice event.  "It's hit and miss this time of year," he said.  Bo noted that next year the owners of the Brandermill Country Club tennis facility plan to raze more than 1/2 of the outdoor courts to make way for a condominium complex.  "It's sad....this is one of the nicest facilities in the city."

In the boys 12s, Colfax Philips and Benjamin Bowles met again in the finals, with Colfax the victor in a third set tiebreaker.  In the previous novice tournament at Burkwood, the pair played for the consolation final trophy.  Congrats to both for making it to the main draw finals!

Novice tournaments are for players wanting to get exposure to tournament play as well as more seasoned players who do not yet have a MATA/VT ranking.  MATA/VT players must play in Satellite tournaments.    

The next Novice tournament will be held at Woodlake July 17 -21.

Boys' 14 Singles Final:  Eric Smith d. Luisito Andrade 6-2, 6-0

Eric Smith (left) won his second tournament this year.  He took first in the previous McDonalds Novice Tourney.  He is a rising sophomore and plays at Burkwood. With him, Brett James, who lost to Jody Cox in a third set tiebreak for the second time this month; Justin Garton,  a MATA ranked player who plays in Satellite tournaments; and Kaleb Webb, who helped his dad Bo get the courts ready for play.  Kaleb played in the boys 14s.

Ann Bokinsky (left) and Olivia Bowles.  This is Olivia's second win of the season.  She won the girls' 14s at Burkwood, and was playing up a division in this tournament.

Girls' 12 Singles Final: Kelsey Miller d. Alexa Rennie  6-2, 6-2
