THE ANTHEM CHALLENGE

One weekend every autumn, typically the first full weekend in October, area tennis clubs send their top players at each NTRP level to The Westwood Club to compete in one of the premier team tennis events in Virginia.  The Anthem Challenge features over 500 area tennis players battling over a three day period for the coveted Anthem Challenge trophy, which the winning club proudly displays until the following year.

The competition started 14 years ago as the brainchild of former RTA President Tom Vozenilek. The Challenge has been a terrific success, with the help of  sponsor Anthem Corporation.  Anthem, Virginia's leading health care company, has continually supported the tournament since the beginning.  "We are pleased to sponsor the Anthem Challenge as part of our efforts to promote a healthy lifestyle," said Anthem representative Keith McMullen.

The format includes men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles at each NTRP level (including an open division for players at or above the 5.0 level), with points earned for each team victory.  This event has become so popular that club players often compete for months just for the opportunity to represent their home club at the Anthem Challenge.
