RICHMOND AREA ADULT LEAGUE TENNIS

There are many opportunities for players desiring to play competitive tennis in USA leagues.

In order to play in adult league teams, a player must have a current USTA rating.  Players new to tennis may self-rate, using standards set by the USTA.

To determine which league is right for you, below is a list of current leagues operating in the Richmond area.  Certain clubs have their own rules specifying who can play on club affiliated teams, and the Mid-Atlantic also sets rules governing roster size and players.  Contact your local club for more information on how to sign up for USA Leagues, or go to the USTA website for more information. The USTA employs League Coordinators in the area who run the many competitive tennis leagues. Suburban Adult Leagues (RSLTL)
The aim of the Richmond Suburban Ladies Tennis League is to foster friendly tennis competition among the member clubs.  Membership is comprised of recreational centers and clubs in Richmond and surrounding counties.  Players must be the age of 21.  The league has separate Championship, A, B, and C divisions which play on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays at 9:30 am.  League play starts in September and runs through May, with a winter break in the months of December-February.  Play is on outdoor courts.

USA Weekday Adult Leagues
Weekday leagues are for women only.  These leagues begin competition in May and end the regular season in July.  Qualifying teams have the opportunity to play in District, Sectional and National tournaments.  Play typically begins at 9:00 a.m. on outdoor courts, which can be either hard or clay.

USA Weekend Adult Leagues
Weekend leagues are for men and women.  These leagues begin competition in early April and end in July.  The format is two singles matches and three doubles matches per week. Typically, women have matches on Saturdays and men play on Sundays. Match times are set by the host club, and play may be on either hard or clay courts. Qualifying teams have the opportunity to play at City, District, Regional and National tournaments through October.

USA Weekend Mixed Doubles Commonwealth Fall Outdoor League
This league is newly formed and follows rules similar to the Winter Indoor League.  The league plays its matches outdoors on Saturdays and Sundays beginning in September and ending in November.  Qualifying teams that go on to play in Districts may play their matches indoors. Since matches are held outdoors, players do not need to play for an indoor facility, but it is preferable to have access to outdoor courts with lights, as it does become darker later in the season.

USA Weekend Mixed Doubles Winter Indoor League
This league is the only league that plays its matches indoors during the winter.  The season runs from January to the end of March, with matches scheduled Saturday and Sunday.  Times are determined by the host club.  Qualifying teams have the opportunity to play at District, Regional and National tournaments through September.  Players must play for an indoor facility to participate in this league.  Indoor courts may be either hard or clay.  Players combine their USTA ratings to determine the league level, although only a 1.0 rating differential is the maximum allowed.  The format for this league is three mixed doubles team matches per week.

USA Combo Doubles Summer League
This league is a new league formed in the Summer of 2005.  There are men's and women's league teams that play in combined levels:  6.5, 7.5, 8.5, 9.5.  The format of play is the same for regular doubles leagues.

USA Richmond Senior Leagues
The Senior League season runs from July through August.  The format is three doubles team matches per week.  In order to play in the Senior league,  players must be 50 years old during the season.  There is also a Super Senior League for those 60 and over, and for those 70 and over, players may participate in the Super Duper Senior League.
