Edgar Vitkovski and coach, Phil Thacker.  Edgar is the 2006 Davenport Junior City Champion in Boys 16s.

5/15/07
:  No big surprises made headlines in Monday evening play, although Godwin senior Chris Cosby continued to pound his way through the draw with a three set win over Patrick Gee.  Cosby, who played #3 singles (that's how good Godwin is!) in a Central Region playoff with Midlothian on Monday afternoon,  is slated for a busy week of tennis.   With matches at Byrd Park and on high school courts this week, Cosby --currently ranked 56th in MATA Boys 18s-- plans on making the last month of his senior year a memorable one.  He'll play 3rd seed Jakub Petersson on Wednesday.

Edgar Vitkovski,  an 8th grader at Pocahontas Middle School, pulled his coach-mentor Phil Thacker in the second round.  Edgar was able to earn one game, but that's OK as he's not even in high school yet.  The high school set to welcome him with open arms:  Godwin, of course.

Both of the Steinours won their matches, with Sean now set to meet Phil Thacker on Wednesday at 5:00.  Scott will play defending champion Damian Sancillio at the same hour and date.  Sancillio defeated Charles Stafford in two sets in his first scheduled match.

Chris and Ryan Radke, former Midlothian players, now play for Bridgewater College.

7th seed Charles Einwick will play 4th seed Brent Wilkins on Wednesday as well.   No reason to be anywhere but Byrd Park that day!

Practice partners Brent Wilkins and Charles Einwick will meet on Wednesday.

In women's play, former city champions Kirsten Elim and Julie Kaczmarek quickly dispatched Cherie Lane and Lara Hansen.  Lane and Hansen are 4.0 players at Raintree.

Kaczmarek, whose wedding date is this summer, and Elim, a married mom of three,  will play former tour pro Joy Fuhr and her 12 year old daughter Anna  in the final on Tuesday at 6:30.  It was a short week for women's doubles play, unfortunately, but a title is still a title and may the best team win!

Joy Fuhr, playing in singles as well, won her first round match against Lindsey Pantele 6-2, 6-2.  Pantele, who plays for Christopher Newport University, is currently ranked  33rd in singles in the Atlantic South division.  Fuhr now has the privilege of playing top seeded Bridget Reichert next.
