2007 DAVENPORT CITY OF RICHMOND
It was a low key affair among friends. This year's edition of the Adult Division City of Richmond Championships proved that it is still mostly a men's event. "We had women in the doubles divisions who signed up, but we also had the first double default [in women's 50 doubles] probably in our history," said Tournament Director Jim Wood, lamenting the lack of females on court. But the men came out as usual, and enjoyed the competition and the opportunity to be named a City Champion in their sport of choice. Many of the participants played in more than one division, changing partners if necessary. White was the prevalent uniform color choice, since many players hailed from CCV. And manners were exemplary, perhaps attributable to the fact that at least two of the participants were preachers. In fact, a men's 40's draw time had to be rearranged on Sunday, since David Dwight was otherwise engaged - giving a sermon to the congregation at Hope Church in Goochland. The banter was non-stop at the check-in table as Jim Wood and Randy Blunt met with returning players. Both have volunteered to work at the event for more years than they'd like to admit. Lynn Bybee, the Director of Tennis at Willow Oaks, hasn't had to go far to participate in the City Tournament. Having the courts within steps of his pro shop helps. This year he repeated as City Champion in Men's 45s. David Carter came up to check in for his singles match against Tom Bryan in the 55s. "I guess I'll just play Larry since Tom's not here," offered Carter, surveying the surrounding gallery (which was rather quiet mid-day). "Tom'll be here," said Wood, factually. "Oh, I'm just kidding. You get old and can't take a joke," laughed Carter. "I'm not old," Wood insisted. "I'm sending the peanut man over (referring to the commercial where the peanut salesman throws the bag at the guy sitting high in the stands)." "You mean Royster's here?" Carter bantered. John Royster is a long-time USTA official, who let Jim Denoon take over the demanding chore of monitoring this bunch for the week. Denoon, a self professed recovered hot-headed racquet thrower, has since long cleaned up his act and now makes sure others have, too. There wasn't much racquet throwing going on, so Denoon enjoyed his "work", sitting at the check-in table, telling stories. Which, after tennis, is the reason for these tournaments, anyway.
